The wide open road awaits, but if you don’t take care of your skin, so does a litany of skincare issues ranging from merely unsightly to serious. So, before you jump on your bike and cruise off into the sunset, read on: here’s how you can protect your hide on your ride.
1. Use Sunscreen
This should be obvious by now, but it bears repeating: slap on some SPF on any and all exposed skin. (And if you’re wearing proper protective gear, there shouldn’t be much exposed skin.) Prolonged sun exposure can result in premature aging of your epidermis, sun spots, discoloration, burns and of course, eventually, skin cancer. Sunscreen with SPF 30 should be your minimum.
2. Gear Up!
A good quality, DOT approved helmet, jacket, jeans or even leather pants or chaps: the best way to protect your skin on your motorcycle is to wear the proper protective gear. You may have visions of cruising down the highway with nothing between your skin and the road but the wind and your bare arms, but unless you want the worst case of road burn imaginable, keep your precious epidermis undercover! In that vision of freedom on your bike, you probably didn’t have skin grafting, after all.
3. Cleanse, Cleanse, Cleanse!
How fresh is all that fresh air you’re getting on your hog? You may never know, but the fact remains environmental toxins and good ol’ fashion dirt really build up on your skin after a ride, so be sure to cleanse your fash with a gentle, nourishing face wash after you’re off your bike. This will clean your pores, reducing build up that can make your skin look older, dull and tired. It also removes grime that could result in breakouts.
4. Use Toner
Toner is the unsung hero of the skincare world, helping cleanse your skin (especially your pores) deeply while also preparing it for optimal moisturising by balancing out your skin’s pH. Use toner after cleansing, and before moisturising. Apply it to a clean cotton pad — you’ll be amazing what a good toner can unearth from your pores after a long ride!
Finally, be sure your skin gets a healthy hit of hydration everyday, but particularly after you’ve been out on your motorcycle. This will support your skin’s natural cellular regeneration, helping your skin look and feel it’s best. Don’t skimp on your products: get great quality hydration like L’Occitane skincare for best results.
